I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop last week and found it necessary to tweak the size of the unity launcher and the unity dash (application search)

Unity launcher size

Start by installing CompizConfig Settings Manager, it’s available in the Ubuntu Software Center.

Once the CompizConfig Settings Manager is installed, start it and click the Ubuntu Unity Plugin (it’s found in the desktop category.)

Then press the “Experemental”-tab and change the “Launcher icon size”. 32 is the smallest size.

Unity dash size
You can modify the dash by using dbconf-editor or by entering the following commands
Resized mode:

$ gsettings set com.canonical.Unity form-factor Desktop # Force resized mode

Fullscreen mode:

$ gsettings set com.canonical.Unity form-factor Netbook # Force fullscreen

Defualt mode:

$ gsettings set com.canonical.Unity form-factor Automatic # Default
